MORPHOLOGY, HISTOLOGY, AND FINE STRUCTURE Patterns of Genitalic Morphology Around Suture Zones in North American Lycaeides (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae): Implications for Taxonomy and Historical Biogeography

چکیده
Within the North American Lycaeides (Hübner) fauna, there are at least three major lineages thatexhibit extensivemorphological andecological variation, especially at suturezoneswhere these lineages meet. We examined male genitalic morphology inLycaeidespopulations spanning much of North America to evaluate the current taxonomy and to address questions about the patterns of morphological variation at suture zones and potential evolutionary processes responsible for the patterns. Our genitalic measurements were based on those of V. Nabokov who revised North American Lycaeides taxonomy in the 1940s. Canonical discriminant analysis validated NabokovÕs original species designations, but it did not support many of his subspeciÞc designations. Populations at a suture zone in the Great Lakes region are similar to populations on the east side of this zone. Populations at a western suture zone in the Sierra Nevada and adjacent ranges exhibit intermediate morphology between lineages on either side of this suture zone. We tested the hypothesis that contemporary gene ßow contributes to the patterns of morphology in suture zones by testing for the increased variance in quantitative traits that is expected in a hybrid swarm. Based on a comparison of variances from populations within and outside of these suture zones, there is no evidence of current hybridization between lineages, with the sole exception of the population sample from the White Mountains of eastern California. The intermediate morphology and the general absence of increased variance within western suture zone populations imply that hybridization may have been important in the evolution of North American Lycaeides.

MORPHOLOGY, HISTOLOGY, AND FINE STRUCTURE Egg Morphology Varies Among Populations and Habitats Along a Suture Zone in the Lycaeides idas-melissa Species Complex (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae)
Insect eggs are often characterized by an intricately sculptured external surface, which has been used to a limited extent as a taxonomic character, but not at all in comparisons among populations within a species or among populations of closely related species. We describe egg morphology by using scanning electron microscopy from 12 populations within a species complex of host-speciÞc butterßi...
متن کاملMorphology and Histology of Lyonet's Gland of the Tropical Tasar Silkworm, Antheraea mylitta
The morphology and histology of Lyonet's gland in the second to fifth instar larvae of Antheraea mylitta Drury (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) are described. Each of the paired silk glands of this silk worm were associated with a Lyonet's gland. The paired Lyonet's glands were located on the ventrolateral sides of the esophagus, close to the subesophageal ganglion. Whole mount and SEM observations r...

Introduction: Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology not only confirms the presence of metastatic disease, but also gives clues regarding the nature and origin of the primary tumour. Study Design: The study material comprised of all aspirates (1978 aspirates from 1255 patients) from the neck lymph nodes during the period January 2003 to December 2003. All hematolymphoid neoplasms were excluded. The FN...

The pecten oculi of the great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) has been examined by light and electron microscopy. The pecten in this species is of the pleated type and is small in comparison to the size of the eyeball. It consists of 7-8 accordion folds which are joined apically by a pigmented bridge of tissue. Within each fold are numerous capillaries, larger supply and drainage vessels and plen...
